SIKKIM - RIGHT TO INFORMATION ACT

The Government of India enacted the Right To Information Act on June 15, 2005 with a declaration that the public authorities should implement the same Act in the country within 120 days owing to failure on the part of the latter(the public authorities) to fulfill upon certain eligibility criteria particularly the appointment of PIOs under section 41 b of the act.

The AATI (Accounts and Administrative Training Institute) is the State Implementing Agency for the RTI Act with an allocated fund of Rs 20 lakhs (Rs 6 lakhs for State component and Rs 7 lakhs each for the District component).

Mr DK Gazmer was appointed as the first chief information commissioner (CIC) of Sikkim in August, 2006 and continues to hold office to date. He is an IAS officer of the 1984 batch, had served the state government in various capacities before he retired in 2003.

The Rural Management & Development Department has thus initiated a dedicated Information Dissemination Cell based in the state Head Quarters to provide quick response to the anticipated queries vide the RTI Act.

Mr. Sandeep Tambe, Joint Secretary (LRD) has been designated as State Public Information Officer (SPIO) and Mr. Kishore Pradhan, APO (Monitoring) is the State Assistant Public Information Officer (APIO) respectively.
