Sikkim Renewable Energy Development Agency

AN OVERVIEW
The Sikkim Renewable Energy Development Agency (SREDA) was constituted and registered as a non profit making society in the year 1999. SREDA has been mandated with the implementation of all Renewable Energy Progrmammes in the state. It is also the designated Nodal Agency of the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy, Government of India

PROGRAMMES
NATIONAL BIOGAS & MANURE MANAGEMENT Programme (NBMMP)
Under the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy sponsored National Biogas & Manure Management Programme, over 4000 Family-size Biogas plants of 2 cubic meters capacity have been constructed in the state. The Capital subsidy component per plant is Rs 11.700/- While the balance expenditure towards costs is borne by the beneficiary.

SOLAR PHOTO VOLTAIC (SPV) programme is yet another programme that is supported by the ministry of New & Renewable Energy. Government of India. Under this Programme various solar lighting systems have been installed throughout the State:

Solar Home lights 4100 numbers
Solar lanterns 2470
Solar Street lights 215”
Solar power plants 2”
SOLAR WIND HYBRID SYSTEMS
A number of small wind Hybrid Systems have been set up on a pilot basis. Due to the State’s geographical location hybrid systems that harness energy from two or more renewable sources. Have been found to be highly practical.

Solar wind hybrid systems have been installed in remote areas such as police outposts, the Nathula Sherathang International Trade Mart, and in inaccessible high altitude areas like Thangu in North Sikkim.

SOLAR WATER HEATING SYSTEMS
As a means of saving energy and costs the promotion of solar Water Heating systems has gained much popularity SREDA has been involved in promoting these eco friendly systems in domestic as well as commercial establishments and government schools and establishment.

Over 30,000 Liters per day capacity of Solar Water Heaters have been installed in the State.

MICRO HYDEL PROJECTS
The Sikkim Himalayas are one of the rainiest locations in the country. And its topography of steep slopes makes it ideal for hydro power generation.

The numerous streams and tributaries of the larger rivers such as Teesta and Rungeet are all potential of run of river hydel projects. SREDA has initiated and also been mandated with the implementation of all micro hydel projects below 500kw and has set up a number of community owned micro hydel projects in the state. The most prominent among these are:

     Karek (10Kwp) South Sikkim,
     Hee Bermiok (25Kwp), West Sikkim,
     Ghor (20kwp), North Sikkim
     Bankjakri Falls (7kwp), East Sikkim

An initiative to survey and map all the potential micro hydro sites in the state has also been recently started by the Agency.

ENRGY EDUCATION PARKS
In order to create awareness amongst the general public about the usage of new and renewable Energy. Energy Education parks have been set up in the four districts of the state. A state-level Energy Park has also been set up at Banjhankri Falls at Ranka, near Gangtok, which has since then become a popular Tourist Spot.

WIND MONITORING
SREDA has set up three wind monitoring stations at Assangthang in South Sikkim, Thangu in North Sikkim and Nathang in East Sikkim.

At present more survey work is underway to assess the harness able wind resource available in the state. In this regard, the wind mapping of the entire State is also being undertaken by the Agency in collaboration with the Centre for Wind Energy Technology, New Delhi.

AWARENESS & PUBLICITY
Awareness and publicity play an important part in spreading acceptance of Renewable Energy among the masses, both rural and urban Hence. SREDA has undertaken a number of awareness generation activities at the state and school level.

URBAN: Every year, SREDA organizes Quiz & painting Competitions with Renewable Energy as the main theme. Akshay Urja Diwas, (coinciding with the birth date of the Late Prime Minister of India, Mr. Rajiv Gandhi,) is observed with mass awareness campaigns. Other activities include Seminars, Workshops and information Dissemination.

RURAL: TO take awareness to the grassroots level. SREDA exhibition and demonstration stall are put up at all rural fairs and festivals all year round.

RURAL ENERGY PROGRAMME
Under this programme LPG (Liquefied petroleum Gas) Cylinders are distributed free of costs to people living below the poverty line in the rural area. The objective of this being to discourage and curb the practice of feeling of trees for firewood.

Each BPL beneficiary is identified by the village panchayat after which the or she is given a set of 2 LPG cylinders, a regulator, and a double burner cooking stove.

The entire project is founded by the State Government.

TRANING & CAPACITY BUILDING
Training and capacity Building is an important component at the Agency. Imparting of training for masons is an integral part of the Biogas programme. Under the Solar energy programmes. The unemployed youth of the state are lighting devices, thereby providing them with a source of livelihood as barefoot engineers’.

All community-owned micro hydel projects, like the one at karek, are manned by local unemployed youths. They are paid a monthly wage for the upkeep and maintenance of the turbine and the power house.

Regular field workshops in the rural areas are also conducted as follow-up on the training imparted.
